Sump Pumped Sentiments, curated by Matt Phillips, @ TSA NY
by Guy Yanai | 02.03.14Strange title for this exquisite show of paintings in Brooklyn at this artist run and curated project space in Brooklyn, NY. Curated by painter Matt Phillips this show puts together four painters working today on the east coast of the U.S. : Todd Bienvenu, Gideon Bok, Shara Hughes, and Jason Mones.
The premise here begins with Van Gogh’s painting The Potato Eaters of 1885. Phillips is intrigued by this impassioned portrayal of a meal eaten by a poor family, a gritty beautiful gathering of people eating together. In essence what can be more intimate? “At the table we do our best to pull it together and relate to one another before heading our separate ways” writes Phillips. How true this is, especially now, when at meals we try as hard as possible to resist the iPhone. This meeting point of people is the starting point for colliding these four great painters.
